In accordance with the American Rescue Plan passed in March, unemployed people were supposed to continue receiving $300 weekly bonus checks on top of the money they were receiving for unemployment until Sept. 6. Now, 24 states and counting are removing these benefits months early. The financial assistance will not only be stripped away from people who are unemployed, but also from those who are self-employed. According to CNN, people collecting regular state unemployment benefits—which generally last up to 26 weeks—will still receive those payments but will not get the additional $300. Meanwhile, people in the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance and Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation programs will lose all their benefits, CNN reports. On May 21, as state governors continued to announce they were ending the COVID financial assistance early, a federal administration official told CNN there’s nothing the federal government or Department of Labor can do to combat these states’ decisions. Per the official, the Labor Department exhausted its options, leaving it unable to pay out the extra $300 a week in the states that are ending the benefits. States are ending this financial assistance program early at dates from June 12 to July 10.
